MOVIE REVIEWS

From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos. Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn make for an adorable would-be couple in this romantic comedy. Aniston (THE BREAK-UP) stars as Sue, a saleswoman who stops into Mike's (Zahn, SAHARA) motel on a sales trip. Business soon turns to pleasure, and the pair has a quick affair before she leaves. But after Sue's departure, Mike realizes that his heart might have walked out the door with her, and he's soon in quick pursuit. In this guts-and-gore-fueled sci-fi action film, soldier Mitch Hunter (Thomas Jane) fights on the side of a powerful corporation on a dying earth. But the battle grows even deadlier when the war unearths a legion of mutant warriors intent on the destruction of the world. HELLBOY's Ron Perlman ditches the red makeup to play Brother Samuel, a monk who guards a prophetic text that predicted the mutants' invasion. Stephen Frears, director of THE QUEEN and HIGH FIDELITY, continues to demonstrate his genre-defying talent with this adaptation of a Colette novel. Set in Paris in the years before World War I, CHERI paints a picture of the romance between young Chéri (Rupert Friend) and retired courtesan Léa (Michelle Pfeiffer). Chéri's mother (Kathy Bates), a rival of Léa, plots to separate the pair by arranging a marriage between her son and Edmée (Felicity Jones). Screenwriter Christopher Hampton previously collaborated with the director on DANGEROUS LIAISONS.
